A comprehensive one day fire safety training event by the authors of the sector-led guide. In addition to covering the technical content of the guide, the trainer will be able to give a unique insight into the background and thinking behind the approach taken in the guide.

Who will benefit from attending?

This event is suitable for all those involved in the management, assessment and enforcement of fire safety in specialized housing. It will be particularly relevant to private and social landlords, other housing providers, managing agents or facilities managers, care and support providers, local authority service commissioners, fire risk assessors and enforcing authorities. The course is accredited with 7 FIA CPD hours and 7 IFSM CPD hours.

Learning Outcomes

Delegates will:

    • Obtain insight into why fire risk and fire safety in specialized differs from other buildings.
    • Enhance their knowledge of the laws governing fire safety in specialized housing.
    • Increase their understanding of the fire safety design principles associated with different forms of specialized housing.
    • Understand the person-centred approach for vulnerable people.
    • Understand the appropriate approach to fire risk assessment for specialized housing.

Delegates will have an opportunity to discuss technical and management issues associated with this important guidance.

Cost

£345 plus VAT per delegate – to be prepaid (by cheque or BACS or credit card excluding AMEX).

Accommodation is not included.

  1. We have limited places on each course.  Therefore, confirmed bookings will be made upon receipt of payment on a first come, first served basis.

Fire Safety in Specialized Housing Programme

9.00 am                 Course Opening & Introduction

    • Introduction and background to the development and scope of the guide.
    • The risk of fire in specialized housing.
    • Fires in specialized housing and their impact.

Coffee

    • Fire safety – how specialized housing differs from other residences including fire safety design principles for specialized housing.
    • The law governing fire safety in specialized housing – who is the “responsible person”, the duties imposed under the Fire Safety Order (FSO), the scope and overlap of legislation and the enforcement of the legislation under the FSO and Housing Act.
    • The person-centred approach – characteristics of vulnerable residents and person-centred fire risk assessment.
    • The requirement for a fire risk assessment – the types of fire risk assessment and their scope.  The risk assessment process and action plan.

Lunch

    • Fire prevention in specialized housing – including common fire hazards and suitable control measures to reduce the risk. Hazards and control measures for the storage and charging of mobility scooters.
    • Fire protection for the person – protection measures arising from person-centered fire risk assessments, including detection and suppression.
    • Fire protection measures in specialized housing – compartmentation, means of escape, smoke control, emergency lighting, signs and notices, fire extinguishers.  Fire detection and alarm systems in conjunction with evacuation strategy.

Tea

    • The management of fire safety in specialized housing – ongoing management control, “zero tolerance” and “managed use” policies, responsibilities matrix, testing and maintenance requirements, engaging with residents.
    • Q & A Session – opportunity for delegates to raise specific issues on the guide and other relevant fire safety matters.
