This comprehensive course is designed to enable persons with basic knowledge in fire safety principles and practice to apply their skills competently in conducting or auditing fire risk assessments. As part of the course, delegates undertake a practical workshop exercise, and their competence is tested by written examination on the final day.
The course is run at different venues, usually one in Surrey and one in Scotland. Subject to demand, we periodically run the course in Belfast. The course consists of four full days of training, delivered by two experienced trainers, whose backgrounds are as fire risk assessors. Part of the course includes undertaking a practical exercise which is a fire risk assessment of a building. The final day consists purely of the examination. Delegate numbers are limited on every course to provide an optimum training environment.
The course focuses on fire risk assessments in commercial premises and considers residential premises. However, for the Surrey courses, a workshop is run on one evening to specifically cover residential premises.
The course is recognized by the Institution of Fire Engineers for the purpose of their Register of Fire Risk Assessors and Auditors. Please note, the Institution of Fire Engineers have recently changed their requirements for entry onto the Register of Fire Risk Assessors. All new applicants need to have applied to or be registered with the Engineering Council as EngTech. Whilst we are happy to discuss this on the course, the course itself does not cover the Engineering Council application requirements. The Fire Risk Assessment course attracts 29.5 IFE CPD hours and 29.5 FIA CPD hours.
Delegates will develop:
On completion of the course, results are issued electronically, usually within four weeks of the examination date. All places on courses must be booked and paid in advance.
It is assumed that delegates on this course already an understanding of fire safety. Accordingly, the objective of the course is to transfer basic skills in fire safety into the culture of fire risk assessment. However, some of the relevant fundamental principles of fire safety are reviewed during the course. The Government guides to fire safety legislation would provide useful background reading and are recommended pre-course reading. These are:
£1,100 plus VAT per delegate (£1,320) – to be prepaid (by cheque or BACS)
Included in the cost:
Accommodation is not included.
The fire risk assessment course is designed to provide delegates with an understanding of the principles of fire risk assessment sufficient to enable delegates to undertake and review fire risk assessments in existing buildings. Although the principles of fire risk assessment do not change, the time constraints on the course are such that it is often not possible to cover all types of premises in detail. We are aware that some delegates may be interested to receive additional training and information on residential premises including purpose-built blocks of flats, sheltered and extra care housing and supported housing. We are running a workshop to give delegates an opportunity to attend an evening seminar in which we will provide additional risk assessment training on both the LGA guide Fire safety in purpose-built blocks of flats and the NFCC guide Fire safety in specialised housing.
The seminar will be free of charge and will run on the Wednesday evening from approximately 1800Hr to 2000hr and will include a complimentary buffet. It is intended where possible that the Managing Director of the company, Colin Todd, will be attending towards the latter part of the seminar and he will be available to answer questions and provide an update on current fire safety issues in purpose-built blocks.
There is no additional cost to attend the seminar, but it must be booked at the time of submitting your booking form.
One set of course notes are provided in the legislation reflecting where the course is being delivered. However, we can provide additional course notes in English & Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland if this is of assistance to you. Additional course notes are charged at £45 per set and must be specified on the booking form and prepaid.
Your examination will be in the legislation reflecting where your training is being held e.g. England and Wales. If you wish to sit a different examination, this must be specified on the booking form.
The written examination on the final day is an open book examination, supervised by an invigilator. It is to test understanding and knowledge, not recall. It requires completion of a paper by hand. If you have any special requirements for the examination, please ensure this is specified on the booking form.
