Prior learning
It is not essential to do any background reading as it is assumed that delegates on this course already have a basic understanding of the principles of fire safety, including fire prevention, fire protection and fire safety management. For delegates who do not have a background in fire safety, we recommend that they read the relevant government guidance details of which are below:
For England and Wales:
- Fire safety risk assessment: sleeping accommodation.
- Fire safety risk assessment: offices and shops.
For Scotland:
- Practical fire safety guidance for existing premises with sleeping accommodation.
- Practical fire safety guidance for existing non-residential premises.
For Northern Ireland:
- Fire safety risk assessment: sleeping accommodation.
- Fire safety risk assessment: offices and shops.
In addition, A Comprehensive Guide to Fire Safety by Colin Todd, published by BSI, may be beneficial as background reading prior to attending the course as it is designed to provide an in-depth overview of all aspects of fire safety for the non-specialist.
You may be interested to look at the Competency Criteria for Fire Risk Assessors so that you can map your skills, knowledge and experience against the criteria. In that way, you can identify any learning gaps and decide whether the course is appropriate for you. You can download the document by following the link: here.
Use of mobile phones
We understand that delegates may need to be contacted during the course. Mobile phones should be set at silent.
Examination
Your examination will be in the legislation reflecting where your training is being held e.g. England and Wales for the Berkshire courses and Scotland for the Edinburgh course. If you wish to sit a different examination, this must be specified on the booking form.
The written examination on the final day is an open book examination, supervised by an invigilator. It is to test understanding and knowledge, not recall. It requires completion of a paper by hand. If you have any special requirements for the examination, please ensure this is specified on the booking form.
Mobile phones or electronic devices are not allowed for looking up information.
